Here is the speech Sherrin gave at the sendoff of The Jeju Big Swim on Saturday, July 31, 2010:
The swim represents a mindset. Our swim will have no practical impact in the short term. It won't make less plastic in the sea. It won't stop overfishing. It won't stop people using their cars. But, the Jeju Big Swim is meant to bring attention that our lifestyles are costing the planet.
Big polluters don't start out with big chimneys and SUV cars. He didn't start out pumping pesticides, chemicals, and plastics into the sea. Big polluters started small as 6-year-olds throwing papers underfoot in the streets, heaving old bottles into vacant lots, leaving the remnants of a picnic in the fields or forests.
Change these behaviors and we can change the world.
